Happy Birthday Dad

Today, August 4, would have been your 75th birthday. I know you’re having a blast with Jesus in heaven, so today is not a day for sadness. Today is a day for gratitude.

I’m grateful for the years God gave you with us.

After the events of the last week, I’m reminded how grateful I am that no women and children came out of the woodwork after you left us, determined to claim you in death. As hard as the last year has been, we have mourned you in peace and for that I’m truly thankful.

I call 2018 the year from hell. I didn’t think I could survive losing you. Yet here I am, still broken and a little worse for wear, but standing nevertheless. For that, I’m grateful.

The Waithaka family. This must have been taken sometime in 1980.

I want to dedicate this poem to everyone who lost a loved one recently. I hope it gives you comfort and hope. (If anyone knows the author please leave the name in the comments so I can give proper attribution).

SAFELY HOME

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.

All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh, but Jesus’ love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.

And He came Himself to meet me
In that way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus’ arm to lean on,
Could I have one doubt or dread?

Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still,
Try to look beyond earth’s shadows,
Pray to trust our Father’s will.

There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now while life remaineth-
You shall rest in Jesus’ land.

When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!

I am off to celebrate your birthday with mum and the rest of the family. This being a Sunday, I will sign off with my favourite gospel track, Enda Nasi by Reuben Kigame. No matter how bad my day has been, no matter how low I feel, playing this song on repeat always lifts me up. Have a blessed Sunday.
